Why learn about leverage points?
Learning about leverage points in this masterclass will improve your ability to find and access places to intervene in complex systems in order to contribute to the change you wish to see in the systems you are part of or working with.

Learning about the types of leverage points that are present in systems will help you to look for leverage in places you might not have been aware of before.

It helps you to better estimate the potential impact of an intervention and prioritise between intervention options.
Additionally in this masterclass, we will explore how leverage points interact with each other, so you are able to understand the potential ripple effect of changing something in a place with high leverage and know how to combine interventions in a way where they reinforce each other.

What are leverage points?
Leverage points are places within a system where when a change is made, it has a high potential to lead to a change in the overall behaviour of the system. The impact is larger than the effort it takes to make the change and it does not take continuous effort to maintain the new behaviour.

What is this masterclass based on?
This masterclass is based on the leverage point types as defined by Donella Meadows. Many people who have read her book "Thinking in systems" have found the chapter about leverage points inspiring, but still find it difficult to apply what they have learnt in practice. Therefore we will look at many examples and work on practical exercises throughout this masterclass.

Something that Donella Meadows did not cover in her book is the relationship between leverage point types. I will draw on my own experience working with complex systems to help you understand this aspect.

What will we cover in this masterclass?
In this masterclass, we will start by establishing the fundamentals:
-
What is a system?
-
What are leverage points?
-
How can understanding leverage points help us?
-
What types of elements and relationships do systems consist of?
-

From there, I will tell a brief story about an intervention and it's consequences, that gives you a feeling for the interconnectedness of leverage points.
Following this, we will walk through all of the leverage points one by one.
For each leverage point type, we will discuss:
-
What they are, based on examples
-
Their potential impact
-
How to recognise them in a systems map
-
How they are related to the other leverage points
-
How to intervene in this place
For each leverage point type, there will be at least one exercise to get you used to working with them.

The masterclass is split into two sessions. Between the two sessions, you will receive guidance on how to practice independently.
